It’s July, which means it’s Tour de France season, the single greatest month in cycling. With the news that Greg LeMond was finally presented the Congressional Gold Medal he was awarded in 2020, this is a great time to look back on what may go down as the single most thrilling Tour de France stage for any American cycling fan. American media has had a tendency to call it the most thrilling Tour stage ever, but we suspect that to most Gallic cycling devotées, this stage is nothing short of Shakespearean tragedy. The CBS coverage also carries a strong perfume of nostalgia for some of us, harkening back to a time when pro cycling seemed much less complicated and the future was much more open.
