Young Eritrean pro Biniam Girmay won the Gent-Wevelgem race this weekend, becoming the first African to win a one-day classic. Girmay has won all sorts of big races on the African continent and finished second in the U23 UCI Road race in 2021. He is not coming out of nowhere, even if no one expected him to win this race.
The winning move was well-timed and decisive. Watch for yourself.
I, for one, look forward to a time when a black rider, of any nationality, winning a major race is not big news, but until that day, I didn’t want to miss the chance to bring this rider, this race, and this moment, to your attention.
