We go through phases in life where on occasion we get served up the same topic repeatedly, sometimes for weeks on end. In my life, of late, trust has been a recurring theme: The trust I place in others, the trust they place in me, the trust I depend on to navigate this world.
Cycling has figured in my sense of trust, writ both large and small. It has informed how I trust others. Case in point: I wrote a few weeks back how the trust I placed in the riders I knew from my group rides began to inform not just my social circles, but also in professional affiliation and choosing service providers. I figured if I could trust them well enough to sit a foot off their rear wheel at 28 mph, I could trust their recommendation for a dentist.
Riding in a peloton taught me the value of considering another person’s self-interest. My fear of riding in close quarters dropped when I realized everyone around me was just as afraid of crashing as I was.
What about you? Has cycling informed your sense of trust, or has trust informed your cycling life?
