I stumbled upon Juergen Beneke’s YouTube channel the way I stumble on most things, by having the supreme-lord-algorithm pipe it directly into my eyeballs. Fortunately, Juergen has good things to say, and I thought I’d share this one with you, because it makes a few good, quick points about common stuff roadies deal with.
Juergen won the very first UCI Downhill World Championship in the late cretaceous period or whenever they started holding those, so he’s legit. Also, despite my joke, he’s a year younger than I am. Follow him for some solid advice he doesn’t take ALL DAY to give you.
This completely reinforces my rant history of the single biggest way cyclists have (de)evolved since the 70-80’s.
Lack of mentorship.
Folx just get out the credit card and ride and it is obvious they know nothing of etiquette, safety and riding around let alone, with others.
Gone are the days of tips from the old salts with friction shifters and straight blocks. I cherish the help I received in the mid and late 80’s from seasoned riding buddies and I pass it on when it’s appropriate and welcomed but everyone seems to want to be a Cat 1 out of the starting gate so, what can you do around these hard heads except give them a wide berth?
Old man rant over.
