A couple days ago I finished my day’s work, got changed and headed out for a ride. Unremarkable, right? Not quite. It was pouring rain. And in the 50s. Yes, I wore thermal bibs, because duh.
There was a time when the only way you could get me on a bike in that weather was if I had a number pinned on and my UMASS teammates needed me. Even after I began racing more seriously, you couldn’t get me to head out on a training ride if it was raining, no matter what the temperature. I could handle if rain started falling while I was on a ride, but I wouldn’t leave if it already was.
I’m not sure what changed within me, but I like it. And it’s not like this was a matter of me buying better clothing. I’ve had appropriate stuff for years. Fenders haven’t gotten better, either. Still super-useful.
What about you? Where do you draw the line? Are you the sort of rider who refuses to head out when it’s raining? How does temperature affect your willingness to get wet?
I don’t go out. If caught in it, I keep going.
