TCI Friday – What’s Going On?

Maybe it’s just me, or the folks in my orbit, but it feels as though this year 2025 already has taken its toll on us. In my particular case it began by getting the flu while subbing at an area school and being whacked in bed for 3 weeks instead of a few days of sniffles.

Just as I managed to recover, I was faced with my wife having knee replacement surgery, which upended everything. I immediately became a 24/7 nurse. They say a patient needs a dedicated “coach” for 3-5 days. Reality is more like 3-5 weeks, unless you’re taking care of Lindsay Vonn. Pain medication every 2 hours along with painful exercises throughout the day. At 4 weeks, we finally had a full night’s sleep.

Recovery was slow, much slower than the books suggest. After two months I finally returned to school and got waylaid with another bout of the exact same flu. You would think the second time around would be abbreviated. But noooooo.

All around us it appears others are suffering the same fates, sidelined with colds, flues, injuries, surgeries. People appear to be on edge, looking for some peace and quiet.

Plus, the weather has been crap!

What’s going on?

This week’s question: Has 2025 been unusually difficult for you? Or are you cruising along at race pace?

I don’t know if it’s generational or not.

I had a horrible winter fitness-wise. So spring has been slow and painful. Last summer I pulled both hamstrings playing softball. I guess I can’t sprint anymore.

Happy to say a winter of not doing much that the hammies did ok in game 1 of softball. Need to figure this aging thing out.

It gets hard sometimes to separate the micro from the macro, but I’d say the micro is good with me. I took the winter off, put my body back together, and currently, although not quite fit yet, I’m not in pain, which is amazing. The macro, well, it is troubling, anxiety-causing, and difficult to understand. I’m trying to spend more time thinking about the micro, but man the macro is loud.

My winter wasn’t bad- no injuries or illnesses- but just when I was ready to ramp up some early season riding, February and March served up some rough late winter conditions. Right now some personal/home/family issues are taking up a bit of my headspace but my commuting is becoming more frequent and recreational rides are within sight. Not race pace but pretty good.
