Maybe it’s the empty goo packets I see scattered here and there, or maybe just the thought of goo in general, but I’ve never even tried the stuff. I’m sure I’d gag.
I suppose I’m just a crotchety old man, who took on that ‘tude in my 20s, but I find myself inclined to pass on new fangled bars and goos and drinks.
Never drank a Red Bull. Can’t stomach the idea of drinking something blue, either.
The first energy bars I tried tasted like something someone spit out. All the “healthy” ones still do.
I used to experiment with my diet. Once I wondered how long I could live on just kettle chips, coffee and Coke. I’m still not sure how long I could live on that, because in two weeks I gained 15 pounds.
When I’m on the trails, I used to bring along an apple or two, and share it with my pooch. Then I’d forget about an apple or two in the bottom of my backpack and, well, I figure that’s how they came up with goo in the first place. Yuck!
If I do opt for store bought relief on a road ride with a quick stop at a convenience store at hand, my traditional go tos are a Coke Classic, Twinkies and Cornuts.
What’s your go to refuel?

Remember Power Bars that were like Bit O Honey but at least the broken tooth came with flavor for the latter!
I like fig newtons and certain clif bars when I’m on long rides. Also Untapped because Maple Syrup makes me happy. If I stop at a store, a candy bar is good. And certain flavors of sports drinks when hot. Also water.
The best: Ice Cream bars from the convenience store on a hot summer day! Preferably an It’s It. Or a Snickers bar, regular or ice cream is great. Blue sports drink if I’m really cracked.
The usual: banana and almonds at the start of a long ride, followed by Clif Bars (have to say I’m sick of them but I keep asking my wife to buy them when I run out. What’s wrong with me?). Maybe a gel or chew in the last hour when I’m so tired that eating sounds disgusting.
Luxury: Taco Bell or anywhere else that has fast food tacos. For when I ride through mealtime. That gut rot stuff goes down so easy when riding.
Fig Newtons, peanut butter crackers and vegan jerky (BBQ please).
I used to do gels but haven’t touched one in decades. One of the last gels I had was during a race in the 90’s when it was pretty hot out and ended up barfing.
I’ve been a Clif bar guy for a long time. Their bars taste good and work ok with my stomach. No more Peanut Toffee Buzz, though. I also liked their story, and they were great donating product for events. Since they sold out, I still use them but am looking for a replacement.
When I go into a store, I’ll get some energy drink and a bag of peanuts, preferably honey roasted.
Pre-ride: Coffee hot or cold. On ride: Rasberry jelly beans, Sour cherry gummies from Skratch Labs, maybe a LaraBar double chocolate mini bar. LMNT in bottles. Post ride: Iced coffee maybe a chocolate chip cookie.
