I’m no food blogger, but I love when I discover a thing that’s not meant for cycling but ends up being perfect for cycling, so I’m telling you about these ready-to-eat tamales, Fillo’s Walking Tamales. I was looking for ride food that was closer to real food, and I spied these at the store. What I could tell right away was that they would fit perfectly into a jersey pocket, but what would they taste like?
If I’m honest, I didn’t have high hopes. I was expecting a desiccated corn cake with bitter bits of red pepper embedded in it. That’s mostly what processed food offers. And to keep it real, these are not like the tamales you get at your local Central American restaurant, the ones that reconnect you to the soul of the Earth through their warmth, coziness, and unctuous beauty.
But.
They are tasty. They’re moist, too. They’re easy to eat. They come in six flavors, three sweet and three savory:. salsa verde, salsa roja, salsa habanero, strawberry coconut, peanut butter piloncillo, which is super fun to say, and Mexican chocolate almond.
You can get 7 of them for $17.99 direct from Fillo’s. Some Whole Foods stock them. This is my new energy bar. They’re vegan-friendly if that’s important to you. They’re 4oz each. And they are my new, go-to ride food. Enjoy.
Just saw these at my local grocery. Shoulda picked one up! I don’t ride just to eat goo
I’m going to look for these…
