If you were real busy paying attention to bikes for the last 20-30 years, then you might have missed Arto Saari’s skateboarding career. He was one of the very best, Thrasher’s Skater of the Year for 2001, a big body, grinding long rails and basically wrecking spots left right and center.
As many skaters do, he transitioned to photography, becoming something of an acclaimed surf photographer after setting up residence on the North Shore of Oahu. Just recently, he’s released a book of photos of the bike path that straddles that famous shore, and here’s a brief video about that project.
I love it, because I love bike paths. In some ways they’re so boring and utilitarian, but if you’re on them enough, you come to see they have a life all to themselves, with regular characters and relationships.
