TCI Friday – Hype

The primary rule of storytelling: Make it interesting.

I’m reminded of that as I laugh at its folly on our recent visit to ride the Weiser River Trail in Idaho.

See, over the course of two previous trips I’ve solidified the Weiser story in my head and have shared it on occasion.

It’s a fantastic ride. Love it.

Oh, but I need to say more. Give details.

Since you can only capture the essence of a grand experience in one sentence, one must expand to keep interest.

So, yes, some stretches can be long and dusty and insanely hot, especially in July.

And they ain’t kidding when they post Open Range signs because you can easily find yourself in a standoff with a 1,500-pound cow and her calves.

Let’s not even talk about the cow pies …

Yes, even though it’s a railroad grade, the climbing can wear on you, especially in spots where the gravel lies thick and feels like quicksand.

With that information lurking in my mind, I found myself pooh-poohing another ride after chewing off a big chunk with a glorious ride.

You know, been there, done that.

I almost spent our last day there riding a boring logging road I explored preciously.

Then I thought I’d just go for a little spin on the trail … and I fell in love again.

Forget the moments that challenge. They can never eclipse the pure bliss that floats with me while I ride and then carry home.

This week’s question: Do you find yourself rediscovering your well-worn routes?
