If you follow the current laws of science through to their logical conclusions, then it’s hard to escape the idea that we are living predestined lives, where everything we do follows inescapably from the last thing we did. That’s a pretty tough pill to swallow though, so we invented the idea of free will to make ourselves feel better, and, frankly, to make it more worthwhile to get out of bed every morning.
