Being beholden to riding the last bike you’ve maintained? I know I’ve been there, and I’m sure many other cyclists have found themselves painted into this corner. I’d love to hear a podcast discussing all the stories you guys have on this topic.
For me, the problem often comes from half-assing the maintenance. Like the time I put a new chain on a road bike only to realize the rings and cassette were so worn they only worked properly(ish) with the old chain. Since it was the night before a bike ride, and I had no chance to get new parts, I slapped the old chain back on by reinserting a chain pin. NOT a chain master pin. It only took the first climb on that ride to snap that chain at the spot of the reinserted pin. At least I got to meet a cyclist-loving fence contractor who graciously drove me back to my car.
