A Useful Review – The Walz Wool Cap

It’s that time of year when you might want something more than a helmet on your head. I tend to wear a cycling cap under a road helmet, and I’m not sure if that’s because I think it looks good or because it helps with the sun. I suppose if it was the latter, then I’d just wear a mountain helmet on the road bike, and I don’t, which leaves us with style and/or vanity.

The smart money is on vanity.

Regardless, the Walz wool cap has been a staple of my shoulder season riding for more than a decade. Literally, the same gray wool cap. I see it, hanging by the door in the basement, and I feel real affection.

OK. So why do you want this? First, the wool is warm, but breathable. Blah. Blah. Blah. But no, seriously. When the temperature is 45 -55, having that breathable warmth on your head is so nice. Also, you can wear it a few times in a row without it stinking, which is not the case with the old cotton cap.  It’s got an internal moisture wicking band, so it’s not itchy.

Mine is like a cozy blanket.

Walz makes dozens of colors and designs of these in Sm/Md and Lg/Xl for $42.99. If you want to upgrade to merino they’re $46.99. As I said, I’ve had mine for more than a decade and worn it hundreds of times. Come to think of it, maybe I’ll invest in another one this year.

They are also Made in the USA if that’s important to you. It is to me.
