A Useful Review – The New Clif Blok Energy Chews
Clif has unveiled some new flavors of Clif Blok energy chews. Up until now, the chews have all featured sweet flavors, save for the salted watermelon and margarita flavors, which carried a more savory flavor profile thanks to more salt.
The two new flavors give sour green apple and of sour strawberry lemonade with caffeine. The idea is that by making them a little sour, they are still plenty flavorful and don’t need to be as sweet, which helps combat flavor fatigue, which is the less-than-delightful experience of continuing to taste an artificial flavor even when no longer eating the food in question. But because they are sour, that puckery flavor profile is meant to spur riders to drink more, which has exactly no downsides.
A tube of 6 bloks has either 80 calories (sour apple), or 90 calories (sour strawberry lemonade) per serving, and there are two servings (three chews) per tube. the sour strawberry lemonade also includes 25mg of caffeine—enough to give a little kick, but not enough to give someone tachycardia.
I’m a big fan of both of these flavors and having them as an alternate to my other faves is very helpful. I don’t tend to eat so many in a day that I get flavor or palate fatigue, but I can get tired of a flavor if I have it too many times in a month. I find that after chewing a couple of these, I do, immediately, want to drink, so in their intent, they accomplish their mission nicely.
I’m not one to complain about what energy foods cost, but I don’t spend more than I really need, which is to say, that I steer increasingly to blocks and bars. They digest quickly and are the easiest of any of the blocks to serve. Cheers to Clif for producing a product I love that hasn’t been discontinued.
