By now you’ve seen lots and lots of shots of amazing bikes from MADE in Portland. I’ve long maintained that a big part of buying a custom bike is the relationship the buyer forges with the builder. We decided to capture as many of the builders as we could to show just who these folks are, along with a detail from one of their bikes.

Todd Ingermanson of Black Cat and his partner Jen drove up from Aptos. In a world full of chill builders with a sense of humor he still stands out.
No. 22’s Bryce Gracey is the public face for the relatively young brand. They got my attention so thoroughly I bought one. Bryce is a pleasure to deal with—on top of details, clear communicator, and has a design style that only makes sense when you understand he’s an architect.
Tim Lane of Digit Cycles is an engineer with deep industry experience. I worked with him at Felt Bicycles and he’s a very creative guy.
Ming Tan of Haley Cycles is someone I’ve known from a variety of bike companies, including a once famed distributor, Veltec Sports.
Will Hilgenberg of Albatross Bikes is smart, driven and energetic. It’s people like him who keep the bike industry exciting.
Carl and Loretta Strong of Pursuit Cycles. As builder husband/wife teams go, they have a collectively sunny disposition makes friends wherever they go.

When playing drums in a rock and roll band didn't turn at to be as lucrative as he'd hoped, Padraig left his hometown of Memphis to pursue an MFA in poetry at UMASS Amherst. Writing about his other love, bicycles, seemed a natural progression; certainly it paid better than either poetry or rock music. His work has appeared everywhere from Bicycling Magazine to the LA Times. His feature, "My Day With Ilya," won a Lowell Thomas Award for travel writing. These days he lives in Sonoma County, California, where he attempts to inspire his two demitasse ninja with the wonder of bikes.
